Don't Go Home to These Mistakes with Your Insurance
Buying a home brings with it a ton of responsibilities, so it is probably not out of the question that the importance of homeowners' insurance can sometimes be put on the backburner.
Given that the cost of just about everything continues to go up, making mistakes on homeowners' insurance can be extremely costly to you, especially if you do not have the proper coverage in place.
There are some pitfalls to avoid when it comes to homeowners' insurance, so be sure to get with an insurance agent and discuss how much you want to spend on premiums, what kind of coverage you will need, and if there are things you can do with the home to lessen your costs.
First, be sure to shop around and get multiple quotes for your homeowners' insurance needs.
Even if the first deal sounds really great, it never hurts to look elsewhere and see if even that deal can be topped.
One place to start your search is the Web site for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The site offers a map that gives you access to all 50 states and their individual insurance Web sites. With that access, you can locate links to available homeowners' insurance agents nearby.
Along with the rates, also look at the pay rate claims, deductibles and the company's reputation around the industry prior to purchasing coverage. It is also a good notion to speak with neighbors in the area and see who they shop with for coverage and if they are happy or not with what they are receiving.
While you're no doubt busy like everyone else, it is imperative that you read the policy all the way down to the fine print.
There could be some surprises awaiting you that could end up costing you a fair amount of money, so read up on everything.
Take for example the fact that many people find out too late that they did not realize homeowners' coverage did not include flood insurance.
Keep in mind that buying more coverage than you need is always a no-no and can be expensive. Look at it as a red flag if your policy covers specific sections of your residence minus any broad-range coverage.
Finally, another expensive issue can be failing to stay on top of your policy, aka not reviewing it.
You should update your homeowners' policy every year or so.
It is a good idea to see what new products are options for you and whether or not the agency you are working with has altered its policies.
Buying affordable homeowners' coverage is not that difficult, and it can bring you home to peace of mind and savings if you do it correctly.
